Several Stories

Lately I've been just sketching at the end of the day's work to unwind before heading to bed. I don't start with a story or characters, I just start to sketch whatever comes and let the story evolve. Here are a few.

These little orca bird guys came out of some of the scribbles that I did. I’m sure they’re some little native tribe in the northwest. And they all have things they like to do and jobs in the tribe, like a poet, or a magician, or a witch, or a street performer. But they have one common enemy, and that’s Beaky there. I’m thinking he’s some scary story to tell to their kids to make them behave, about how he comes and gobbles them all up if they don’t obey their parents. But then it turns out that he’s actually real and does start to steal and gobble up people of the tribe.

I was gesturing from rodeos to loosen up for a project I’m boarding on and this story about a kid who comes to the West from London and a Native American mustang just kept forming. Boy is not a cowboy. Mustang knows this.

These two are Little Tawa and Koyemsi. Tawa is a Sunface kachina with a habit of exploring and dragging his friend Koyemsi along. Koyemsi is a Mudhead Kachina who’s supposed to be a clown, but instead is introverted and has somewhat of a temper. Tawa helps to balance out Koyemsi’s melancholy nature while Koyemsi keeps Tawa out of trouble. Sometimes.
Also featured is an Angak’china (Long-Haired kachina) and a variation of an Angwusnasomtaka (Crow Mother kachina).

These were just done for fun, but I would love to hear any thoughts or suggestions that you would have. One or all may turn into something in the future!

Animal studies, Iron studies, Pokemon studies (?)

Big cats aren't my forte, so I'm studying them this month. Here are some tiger studies.

And I needed to throw some dogs in the mix.

I saw Iron Man 3. And loved it. I thought Tony's anxiety attacks were hysterical and incredibly relatable.
And the Pokemonathon over on Tumblr continues:

Somewhat end of semester update

School is super busy lately, so here are a couple of sketches and other odd works to show that I still draw. These are all from my sketchbook that is about dead:
Kelly Loosli

Drawings of my cat, Sealie.
One of my classmates, Austin.

Gesture practice.
The rest of these are just fun, silly sketches:

Commission for a friend on DA.

And drawing Post. Because I missed drawing him.

Personal Art

In between homework and working on the BYU films, I draw just for fun.
Sunday is the day I draw people with cats.

These last two are for a personal film that i'm doing. Her design will be tweaked a little, but she's close to final here.
Here's a teaser board from my storyboards. Boarding will be done by the end of the semester then animation will begin! I'm excited, i've wanted to begin this project for years. I'm glad to finally start it, it's personal to me and I hope it will keep turning out well.

Draw on!

Winter Update

It's been a little while since i've updated, so I thought I'd post some of the things i've been working on. When i'm not animating for one of the many films currently in production here at BYU, i'm drawing whatever is fun to me at the moment.
Sundays are the best kind of days.
Sketch of Sherlock from Elementary.
I really loved Warm Bodies...

These next ones are some designs of the main character for a personal short film i'm currently storyboarding. I'm still trying to work her design out.

And here is a sketchbook sketch. I've loved being able to carry around my sketchbook everywhere again and sketch from life.

I'm spending most of my time animating on the traditionally animated film here at school, but the start date for the 3D animated film is fast approaching. Our head animator for the film has us animate bouncing balls of various weights in Maya to get a feel for the program, so here's a bowling ball.
Maya and I are still trying to develop a friendly relationship.
Here's a ping pong ball.

And the blocking for a personal scene i'm working on. On to smoothing it out!

Thanks for checking in!

Catching up on sketching

Here is some character exploration sketches for Lucy, one of the characters from a short film being produced here at BYU. The title is Bothered and is being directed by Christina Skyles. We're currently working on character designing. I'll be animating on the film, so I wanted to play with the current design for Lucy and try to get some acting sketches down.
I needed to choose a cool art style for my course at work, so I experimented with this piece. Heavily influenced by Kako's work.
Here is my final for digital painting. It's where the Wolf Mafia spends their time.

My final for Drawing for Animation. We had to take an already existing character and render it realistically, for 10-14 year old boys, and for 4-7 year old girls. I chose Capn' Crunch with Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam.

Someitmes it's nice to be able to just draw away from school assignments. I sketched a lot during the break for fun. Recently I started a 30 day sketch challenge:
Day 1- Yourself
Day 2- Your Favorite Animal. My favorite animals are wolves, orcas, and Philippine Eagles. I combined them all into one ultimate favorite animal.
I plan on continuing the challenge, though they may not be as consecutive as I would like with school back in session! The next day is favorite food, so that should be a fun one.

Sometimes I just get an itch to draw dogs.
Well okay, more like all the time.

Last semester, my friend Kiersten started a sketch group for a bunch of us students. It's been a lot of fun so far! We have a new theme every day. I did this one for the day that had the theme of "Lackadaisy cats in the style of Mary Blair":

(on a side note, if you haven't read the webcomic Lackadaisy, then you should be. I'll kindly direct you there right now)

Another sketch theme, this one was "Humanoid Pokemon". I turned Ninetails into a woman who loves fur. Ninetail's fur...

These are just some tiger gestures from watching the cats play across Youtube.

That's it for now!
